What to Expect During a Drug Test

May 31, 20262 min read

Whether you have been asked to take a drug test for a new job, a DOT compliance requirement, or a return-to-duty program, walking in unprepared can feel stressful. The good news is that the process is straightforward, quick, and completely confidential when done at a professional testing facility like Iles Medical Testing.

Before You Arrive

Depending on the type of test ordered, you may need to fast for a few hours beforehand. For most urine drug screens no special preparation is required. Bring a valid photo ID to your appointment — this is required for all testing. If you are taking prescription medications let the collection staff know, as certain prescriptions can affect results and your Medical Review Officer will need to verify them.

What Happens at the Collection Site

When you arrive at IMT you will be greeted by our friendly staff and asked to complete a short intake form. For a standard urine drug screen you will be directed to a private restroom to provide your sample. The collection process takes just a few minutes. For hair follicle testing a small sample of hair is collected from the back of the head — this is quick and painless. For oral fluid testing a swab is placed in your mouth for a few minutes to collect saliva. Blood testing is performed by a trained phlebotomist in a clean clinical setting.

Chain of Custody

For DOT and legal testing a strict chain of custody procedure is followed. This means every step of the collection process is documented to ensure the integrity of your sample. Your sample is sealed, labeled, and shipped directly to an accredited laboratory. This documentation protects both you and your employer.

How Long Do Results Take

Most results are available within 24 to 72 hours depending on the type of test. If a sample tests positive at the initial screening it is sent for confirmation testing before any results are reported. A Medical Review Officer reviews all positive results and contacts the donor to verify any legitimate prescription medications before reporting to the employer.

Your Rights

You have the right to request a split specimen test if you disagree with a positive result. You also have the right to speak with the Medical Review Officer directly. IMT is committed to treating every client with dignity and respect throughout the entire process.

Ready to Schedule

IMT offers same day appointments for most drug testing services. No insurance is required and results are handled with complete confidentiality. Contact us today or book online to get started.
